A term used in various South Americancountries that is used for the game of football
"Hand of God" :
Ironic description of a visible, clear, obvious handball offence in the penalty area allowing the player to score a goal which the referee allows as legal, not having seen the offence. The phrase was coined by Diego Armando Maradona, who committed such an offence in a World Cup quarter-final match between Argentina and England.
"Spanish Fury" :
The Spanish team acquired this nickname after their vigorous performances at the Olympic Games in Antwerp. Such was the impact caused, that sports newspaper Marca created a prize, the Patricio Arbolaza Trophy, for the player doing most to promote this image at the Olympic Games. Winners were Araujo (1953), Navarro (1954), Campanal II (1955), Badenes (1956), Sabino (1957), Ruiz Sosa (1958), Mauri (1959), Rivilla (1960), Adelardo (1961), Zoco (1962), Marcelino (1963), Ansola (1964), Reija (1965), Pirri (1966) and Gallego (1967).
12th man :
Name given to an enthusiastic, loyal crowd whose cheering and chanting encourages their side, enabling the team to raise its game and becoming another factor to take into consideration by the rival side, as if it was another player. Such crowds explain why it is often so difficult to win away games.
Abandoned Match :
A match that is not played for the normal duration (90 minutes), whether due to inclement weather, public safety or public disorder, or for any reason ruled by the referee. An abandoned match should normally be replayed, although individual competition rules may allow the result to stand.
Abductor and Adductor :
Muscles in the thigh located at the height of the junction between the pelvis and the femur. The abductors function is to facilitate the separation of the leg from the body while the adductors function is to move the leg toward the body.
Ace :
Denomination taken from playing cards. In most card games, it is higher than the king, being the card of highest value, but its not the only one. In football, it has much the same meaning. It refers to a player who is highly valued, without saying that he is the necessarily the absolute best
Add :
Simple arithmetic operation that becomes a statistic and remains as the definitive historical record. After the match fairness, luck or incidents have little importance. The numerical result is what matters since the accumulation of points is what determines the progress of a club, places a trophy in the showcase or avoids relegation. Although it ignores the true merits of a team, it is still the best method to reward its performance.
Advantage :
Difference in the number of goals scored in favour of one or other team during a match, or in the number of points in the league table.
