Gaelic Football :

One of the precursors of soccer, this is a game half-way between football and rugby, played in certain areas of Great Britain.


Gallery :

To play to the gallery is to produce a spectacular move that does nothing to further the interests of the team, to show off ones skills in an empty, vacuous way, which may excite the fans, but will not win the approval either of teammates or coach.


Gambit :

A term used as the equivalent of a dribble, particularly in certain Latin American countries (see dribble).


Game :

One of the names used to describe football, as well as sport, entertainment or spectacle.


Game Reading :

The ability to understand what is going on the field of play and to act in accordance, with good results.


Giant-killing :

A victory by a lower division or non-league side over a higher-placed, top-flight or more celebrated club in a knock-out competition.


Gloves :

Worn by goalkeepers to protect their hands from the impact of the ball or to prevent it from slipping out of their grasp. Goalkeepers gloves are usually padded inside for the first purpose and have a rugged outer surface on the palms for the second.


Goal :

Both the physical structure through which the ball must pass and the result of doing so, the goal is the ultimate aim or objective of the game of football.


Goal Average :

A number expressing the mathematical relation between goals scored and goals conceded by a team over the course of a league or other championship. Can be established as the difference or ratio between the two, and used to decide the difference between two or more teams with the same number of points at a given point in the championship or even to decide the winner at the end of the competition.
